Elder Care Services of the Big Bend is boosting its Meals on Wheels capability. The agency held a ground breaking for an expanded kitchen facility on October 21.
What is now called Elder Care Services began in the early 1970s as Tallahassee's provider of the new Meals on Wheels program. Fifty-three years later, the agency prepares and delivers hundreds of meals everyday from a small kitchen in its West Tennessee Street headquarters.
Elder Care Board Chair Monique Akanibi says a much bigger kitchen means many more meals for a need that keeps growing.
"It's really important to be able to continue to offer this to our aging population knowing that they don't have to worry about where their next meal comes from, or not being able to provide themselves with their next meal. It's really important for us to be able to do that."
Construction crews were ready to move in right after Wednesday's groundbreaking to begin work on the thousand-square-foot kitchen remodel. The project should take around six months.
